Chesapeake Bay Forests Highlighted in Upcoming Assessment

Landsat mosaic of Chesapeake Bay - Image courtesy of NASAA researcher working with the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center collaborated with several partners, including the Environmental Protection Agency, to develop a broad, intensive report on forests in the Chesapeake Bay watersheds. The report covers the status and changes in Mid-Atlantic Integrated Assessment (MAIA) forests across topics such as history, land use changes, economics, population growth and urbanization, urban forests, multiple biotic and abiotic stressors, biodiversity, watershed condition, soils, and carbon sequestration. The research provides an excellent baseline on forest resources in this region, and is also an excellent template for assessing forest conditions on a regional basis.

This report will be useful in understanding relationships between the condition of forest ecosystems and the health of the Chesapeake Bay. The document will be an important reference for landowners, policymakers, scientists, and managers (especially state foresters) who strive to balance increasing population growth and use with preserving the integrity of the forest ecosystems and the subsequent health of the Bay.
