The Internation Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO) promotes global cooperation in forest-related research and enhances the understanding of the ecological, economic, and social aspects of forests and trees.

IUFRO logoThe landscape ecology working group of the IUFRO will hold their biannual conference September 16-22, 2008 in Chengdu, Sichuan, P.R. China. The USDA Forest Service is a cosponsor of the conference, themed "Landscape Ecology and Forest Management: Challenges and Solutions.EFETAC director, Danny C. The North Carolina Tree Farm Program serves as one of the landowner outreach vehicles of many Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) member companies.

Tree Farm logoThe North Carolina Tree Farm Committee will host six landowner workshops in 2008. The workshops are free and open to all forest landowners interested in learning more about how they can effectively manage their forests for multiple uses. The planned workshops are:

North Central Piedmont Region - Caswell County/Yanceyville, NC. October 18, 2008. Sponsored by Steve Cox, Weyerhaeuser, Elkin.
South Central Piedmont Region - Rowan County/Salisbury, NC. October 25, 2008. Sponsored by Ed Listerman, Culp Lumber Co.
Northeastern Region - Bertie County/Windsor. October 28, 2008. Sponsored by NC Tree Farm Program, Dave Woodmansee.
Mountain Region - Haywood County, NC. November 5 or 6, 2008. Sponsored by Steve Henson, Multiple Use Council.
Eastern Region - Craven County/New Bern. Date TBD. Sponsored by NC Tree Farm Program, Dave Woodmansee.
Upper Coastal Plain Region - Bladen, Cumberland, Sampson Counties. Date TBD. Sponsored by Jess Hall, Tri-County Tree Farmers.

The USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program is pleased to announce the 2008 FIA Symposium.

FIA Symposium logoThe symposium will emphasize innovative uses of FIA data that shed new light on contemporary issues, such as carbon, climate change, fire, bio-energy/biomass, forest health, and other topics. Plenary and breakout sessions from a variety of disciplines will be presented during the symposium to be held October 21-23 in Park City, UT.
